The Man Called Howard Hughes - 1729 Words

Howard Hughes, a man of stature, an innovator of planes and movies; he seemed to have it all. But with his far from copacetic mental health, his life was consistently crippled by his reclusiveness and inner anguish; both mentally and physically. He had tremendous OCD and agoraphobia that constantly plagued him. For example, while directing The Outlaw, Hughes became obsessed about a very small flaw in one of Jane Russells blouses, nitpicking about the seams in the fabric. He apparently was so upset that he wrote a detailed memorandum on how they could fix it. Writing memoranda seemed to also be a compulsion of his, as he wrote a three paged, single page memorandum on how his aids should open up a can of fruit. pg 233 His extreme and irrational fear of germs developed a pattern of meticulousness within his every-day life. Because of this, he almost never left his home theater. In the theater, he would wipe down his chair, ottoman, side table, and telephone with Kleenex; methodically cl eaning his phone from the earpiece to the cord repeatedly throughout each day. (232) This is shown by the circumstance when Bill Gay, once of his employees wives became sick. He ordered Gay to work from home to prevent spreading the germs. This occured in 1958. Hughes didnt allow Gay back in his presence until 15 years later, in 1973. (234) He used his extreme wealth to avoid his obsessions instead of facing them.
